Cuyabeno Reserve

Primary jungle tours – 4 and 5 days


Day 1

Reception in Lago Agrio at 9:00h, where we will take private transportation to Cuyabeno entrance. We’ll have box lunch there. At this point, visitors must register at Reserve’s office and pay the entrance ticket. Our naturalist guide will give information about Cuyabeno Reserve, important recommendations and other advice to start a two hour navigation along Cuyabeno river.
During the canoe ride we’ll get a first glimpse of the jungle and observe different types of birds, like caciques, oropéndolas and the prehistoric Hoatzin. You can also see a variety of monkeys and other jungle animals, depending on the time and meteorological conditions.
We’ll get to the lodge around 4:30 pm. At this time, rooms will be distributed and you can relax a little. After the nap, we’ll go swimming in the lagoon and see a beautiful sunset. Next, we’ll return to camp for dinner and finish our first day in the jungle, relaxing in a hammock or having a drink in the bar.

Day 2

After breakfast, we’ll go hiking for 3 to 4 hours through primary jungle, where the guide will explain about tropical forest and medicinal plants. You will also observe huge trees like the CEIBO and little insects like ants. We’ll return to camp for lunch and resting. In the afternoon, we’ll go fishing piranhas, watching beautiful butterflies and swimming in the pool. If possible, we can observe pink dolphins. We’ll enjoy an amazing sunset and then return to camp and have dinner. At night, we’ll look for caimans in riversides.

Day 3

After breakfast, we’ll go down the river in a canoe for approximately one hour, to visit a family form Tarapuy community. We’ll learn to make Casabe, a traditional yucca bread, help in the preparation and use the jungle products to bake it. We’ll return to the lodge at two in the afternoon. After lunch and a brief relax, we’ll have a short walk around primary forest and focus on watching nocturne insects, like spiders, geckos or scorpions, and listening the night sounds.

Day 4

Early in the morning, before breakfast, we can have an optional birdwatching tour. Back in the lodge, we’ll have breakfast and take the transportation back to Lago Agrio.

In the 5D/4N tour, a visit to Canangueno Lagoon is included, for birdwatching in a native canoe called “quilla” and another walking in the forest. It is the best chance to observe a larger quantity of fauna and flora, in what is similar to a flooded forest. A great variety of birds and monkeys can be seen. This activity takes approximately 4 to 5 hours, so we’ll take a box lunch with us.
